ST. GEORGE’S ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL,
WINDSOR, ONTARIO.
94 YEARS OF EXISTANCE, (1918-2012)
St. George’s Romanian Orthodox Cathedral of Windsor, Ontario was born 94 years ago. If we are to take into consideration the very beginning of our parish organization – to the present time -, there is a lot of history that was written within the parish. The parish organization has built its Church of 1238-1240 Pierre Avenue, in 1918, where our ancestors used to attend the services. At that time our parish was the second Orthodox Church in Windsor area, after St. John’s Russian Orthodox Church. Our first parish-priest was Rev. Fr. Ion Oancea, and the first Council’s President was Anania L. Bolohan.
In 1927 the parish house was built adjacent to the Church. After critical years on the calendar issue, in 1933 the Romanian community has chosen Rev. Fr. Marin Postelnic as parish-priest, and during his pastorate, the mortgage on the Church-House in Pierre Avenue was paid in 1942.
In 1935 the first bishop to visit our parish was His Grace of blessed memory, Policarp Morusca, the first Romanian Orthodox Bishop for the Romanians on the American continent. But soon, the Church on Pierre Avenue had become inadequate to accomodate the increasing number of members.
With the arrival of Rev. Fr. Nestorian Cicala, the founder of the present Cathedral, the parish had  decided to buy 8 lots on Tecumseh Rd., E., at Kildare-Durham area. In January 1955, with the late John Donison as Council’s President, the old Church on Pierre Avenue was sold to the Bethel Baptist Church, and the result of 37 years of hard labour of our members was transferred to be the first start for the new Church to be built. The existing table for Proscomidia is the former Holy Table from Pierre Avenue Church. In March 1955, the parish house on Durham St., was bought. In 1956, the new episcopate “The Western Hemisphere Orthodox Missionary Episcopate of Canada” came to exist. Many parishioners had played an important role to promote  this new ecclesiastical organization, up until 1963, when the Episcopate, due to the lack of support, adhered to the Patriarchal jurisdiction, as “The Romanian Orthodox Missionary Episcopate in America”.
Starting with May 1955, the parishioners had to hold their religious services at the Casa Romana Hall, (today Prosvita Ukrainian Hall), but in August 28-th, 1955, with the occasion of St. Mary’s Day, they started to hold services in the new Church Auditorium. The Church was elevated to the rank of Cathedral by the Vicar Teofil Ionescu, of the Western Hemisphere Episcopate in 1956, as a recognition of hard work, devotion and dedication on the priest’s part and faithful members. A very important event took place in the life of the parish. On August 7-th, 1966, the members of the parish witnessed in their own Church the ordination of Archimandrite Victorin Ursache as head of the Romanian Orthodox Missionary Episcopate in America and Canada.  The founders, thus, established a spiritual heaven in the New World they had come to. The precious gift of our Orthodox faith had passed to us and our generations to come. At the present time the Cathedral is served by V. Rev. Fr. George Sandulescu, since 1988, having as Council’s President, Monica Mihalceanu, Ladies’ President as Letitia Stanciu and Sunday School coordinator, Carmen Ognean.
On the tenth anniversary since the ordination of our Archpastor, His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae, whom we express our sincere and heartfelt thanks, we pray that the Heavenly Father will bless him to continue to lead us with much devotion and wisdom through the fulfillment of the unity of all Orthodox Romanians on this continent. Unto many Years, Master!

CATEDRALA ORTODOXA ROMANA SF. GHEORGHE.
WINDSOR, ONTARIO.
94 DE ANI DE EXISTENTA, (1918-2012).
Catedrala Ortodoxa Romana Sf. Daca ar fi sa luam in considerare chiar inceputul organizarii parohiei noastre pana-n present, multa istorie s-a scris in cuprinsul parohiei. Organizatia parohiei si-a construit biserica sa din 1238-1240 Pierre Ave., in anul 1918, unde stramosii nostri obisnuiau sa ia parte la slujbele religioase. In acea vreme, parohia noastra era a doua biserica ortodoxa in zona Windsor-ului dupa biserica ruseasca, Sf. Ioan Evanghelistul.
Dupa ani critici, datorita disputelor in privinta calendarului, in anul 1933 comunitatea Romaneasca l-a ales pe Pr.
Existenta masa a proscomidiei reprezinta fosta Sf.
Un eveniment foarte important a avut loc in viata parohiei. Pe 7 August 1966, membrii parohiei au fost martori in propria lor biserica la hirotonirea arhimandritului Victorin Ursache ca episcop al Episcopiei Ortodoxe Roamne Misionare in America si Canada. Astfel, membrii fondatori au stabilit o legatura duhovniceasca in Lumea Noua unde au venit.
Intru multi ani, Stapane!
V. Rev. Fr. George Sandulescu.
